It is an alternative to oyster sauce, has a similar texture, and also gives dishes a comparable flavor note to the proven oyster sauce. Shiitake mushrooms were used for production, yet the mushroom flavor is not too dominant, so the sauce harmonizes well with many different Chinese dishes and can also be used as a dipping sauce.
